Christmas Gifting

We’re all frantically getting ready for the holidays, so I’ll keep this one short and sweet.

Last week we had a bit of fun with the verbification of nouns. A great example is in the use of “gifting” amongst tax professionals. The word actually occurs in the Income Tax Act (http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/I-3.3/page-26.html#docCont) — see s. 35(a) for instance– and has taken on a specific term-of-art meaning. Nevertheless, its subsequent legitimization doesn’t erase the awkward circumstances of its parents’ marital status.

Try this on Christmas morning: “Susie, I’m gifting you this Enchanted Unicorn! I hope you will have much enjoy from it!” I’m guessing the six-year-old will give you a strange look.

If she doesn’t give you a strange look, start loading up her RESP, because she has a great future as a legislative drafter.

Enough, already! Go get your holiday shopping finished, draw lots of big black lines through your calendar, and spend wonderful time with those you love!

And to everyone who shares the Christmas tradition with me, all the joy and blessings of the season, and to all who share other traditions, may you too be blessed and joyous beyond your dreams!

Give a Goat! Seriously!

Not sure what gift to give “someone who has everything” or perhaps someone who doesn’t need one more pair of socks? How about the gift of a gift of a goat to a needy family or village? (https://donate.worldvision.org/give/goats)
