The Secret to Getting Ahead

This is also the secret to getting a report finished, or completing the memo you’ve been working on for the last month. It’s also the secret to getting physically fit, losing weight and learning a new language.

The secret has two deceptively simple components, of which the first is this: just get started. Quit dawdling around, stop doing needs analyses, no more finding excuses– just get started.

The second part is just as simple and just as critical. Once you get started, you mustn’t quit.

You see, more often than not, the reason we didn’t get started was that we thought the task would be too unpleasant or imposing. Sometimes, once you actually get started, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that it’s not nearly as ugly as you had anticipated.

However, the opposite is more often the case. Once you actually get your teeth into it, you begin to appreciate how truly ghastly a task you’ve appointed for yourself. And you just want to quit.

Generally speaking, quitting is not good for character development. So, with your having started, let me leave you with the wisdom and encouragement of two sages. Winston Churchill’s wit first: “When you’re going through hell, don’t stop!” And Confucius second: “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”

Now, pick a project on your list, and prove that you are woman (or man) enough to finish it!

(For particularly ornery problems you just may need a Toad Day (http://www.purposeful.ca/blog/archives/12-2016) .)
