What Do You Say to a Woman?

What do you say to a woman on her 70th birthday?

What do you say to the woman who promised to share a life as long as we both shall live? To a woman who has been a steadfast friend and partner through thick and thin in life and in business? Who has suffered sorrow and hardship with grace and strength, and joy and success as though they were gift-wrapped surprises?

To a woman who has shed 65 pounds over the last eighteen months and looks more stunning than ever? To a woman whose children and grandchildren and friends gather round with love on their faces as they come to pay tribute?

To a woman who, as she looks around at the constellation of strong, kind, generous, caring, successful, and winsome family and friends who surround her, is too modest to recognize that she herself is the common denominator?

As a wordsmith I wish I could find adequate words, but there are none quite perfect enough. Let me only say for the world to hear, “Karen, I love you very dearly, and I’m grateful you’ve shared life with me all these years. May there be many more.”
