How The Donald Trumped the System

During the US election campaign Donald Trump was mocked as a communication disaster, but today he becomes the 45th President. Maybe he got a little help from his friends and maybe he didn’t, but there’s no denying he won the hearts of millions upon millions of Americans, including many traditional rust-belt Democrats, and did so strategically enough to win the Electoral College. Laugh at him they did, but for now at least, he seems to have had the last laugh.

So, does this mean the old rules of effective communication no longer apply? Not at all. On the contrary, Donald Trump actually used three key rules of powerful communication to great advantage, and we’d all do well to pay attention.

First, he knew that our gut response is
far more energetic than our intellectual response. Second, he kept his message simple. This is especially important when you are looking for the gut response. Third, he knew how to maintain our total attention, 24/7. He owned every headline from the day he stepped off the escalator to the night he won, and so far, still does.

These three fundamental principles worked brilliantly for the Donald, and they can work brilliantly for us.

But the story’s not over– there’s much more to learn. Mr. Trump continuously makes three serious communication mistakes, and he will pay the price. Check out my blog for more.
