Conversations with the Subconscious

Paul McCartney awoke one night with the tune for Yesterday playing in his head. American Woman “just happened” in a tuning riff. Tennessee Waltz was composed while the musicians were driving their truck to the next show. No analysis and no forethought.

Nearly all of us have awakened in the middle of the night with a complete solution to some daytime conundrum, or perhaps with a dazzlingly profound insight into some important professional or personal issue. For many of us, our best thinking happens in the shower. Some people report flashes of inspiration while they are driving, hiking, painting, or stacking wood.

The subconscious frequently intrudes upon our consciousness, delivers something of amazing value, then fades back behind the curtain. Students of effective communication need to know what’s going on here, because speaking to the subconscious is critical if you want to make a profound impact and bring about real change.
