The Drone and the Helicopter
Who would ever have thought that helicopter pilots would be wanting for work? Well, it’s come to that. Most things that helicopters can do, drones can do just as well, or maybe better, and much more cheaply. And drones can operate in places which would be too dangerous for humans.
You might argue that drones can’t transport people. Well, if there are autonomous cars, why not people-scale drones? And think about the implications for search and rescue.
The point of this discussion is not to talk you out of your dream career as a helicopter pilot, but to bring into sharp focus the reality that technologies and practices we take for granted today just may not be there tomorrow. It took fifty years for the harness maker to become redundant, ten years for the carburetor technician to be out of work, and it can take only a matter of months for some of today’s callings to become “so yesterday”. Disruptive enterprises like Amazon, Uber, and Airbnb may bring amazing choice, service, and value, but overnight they put many traditional vendors out of business.
So that brings us full circle back to communication. The true magic of effective communication is in, well, the magic. Creativity, serendipity, and imagination fuel powerful communication. These are things within your grasp, but not within the grasp of machines.
This is why I don’t propose “tips and tricks” or apps to help you improve communication. Leave those for the machines. The real secrets of powerful communication lie within you– you are a spiritual/intellectual being with a unique vision. Tap into those and you will communicate like never before, and you won’t be replaced by software.
