Christmas– God’s Communication Lesson

I’m no theologian, and certainly no dogmatist– in fact, I’m rather betwixt and between in terms of my personal beliefs. Nevertheless, the Christmas story never fails to move me deeply.

Whether you believe in a Baptist God, a Catholic God, a Jewish God, something or someone else– or nothing at all– the message of Christmas can be transformative and, dare I say, redemptive. Whether you accept it literally or figuratively, whether you receive it as an historic fact or simply a beautiful allegory, the Christmas story is quite unlike any other.

Bear with me.

The Christian scriptures tell us that “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of graciousness and truth”. Explicitly, the Baby Jesus was a message, a communication from God, that Emmanuel had come– “God with us”. The Almighty had taken pity on our frail race and had come to show us a way back to the Garden. At great cost, a gift was given, and mercy was about to reconcile justice and love.

Is it any wonder that during the Christmas season we experience such powerful sentiments of compassion, gratitude, sweetness and wonder?

So in that spirit, let me wish each and every one of my Friday Briefing friends a joyous, blessed and redemptive Christmas.
