COVID-19 and the Alignment Doctrine
Beyond just surviving, which we will all do, we need to be ramping up for the world after coronavirus. It will be a different world, with new challenges as well as new opportunities. In this regard your choices and your effectiveness will be greatly enhanced if you understand and apply the Alignment Doctrine.
The Alignment Doctrine teaches this, as it applies to professionals:
* Every professional is uniquely gifted. Every client has unique wants and needs. When the unique giftedness is perfectly aligned with the unique wants and needs, there is a maximization of safety, satisfaction, and economic outcome.
That rather makes sense, doesn’t it? The trick for the professional is to have a perfect understanding of his or her own giftedness. And to arrive at that understanding, one needs to know how it came to be.
Your unique giftedness arises from three sources. First, you were born with a basket of attributes unlike anyone else in the world. Some people see the world in a very graphical way, others are highly tuned at an emotional level, some have lightning-fast reflexes– your combination and mine are entirely different, and your combination is what makes you who you are at the core.
The second source of your giftedness is experience, some “good” and some “bad”, but all of it having shaped you into who you are. Whether your parents were supportive or aloof, whether you were the star athlete in elementary school, or the kid who got picked last, these things all shaped the way you deal with the world and how you tackle issues that come your way.
The third source of your giftedness is training, both generalized and particularized. This includes everything from Miss Smith’s piano class to your post-doc, as well as what you’ve acquired from coaches and mentors.
Putting that all together, you come to see that you are not just any old accountant, or run-of-the-mill engineer, but you are the absolutely best suited individual to solve particular problems for particular clients. And it then follows that once the word gets out that you are the “go-to” person in that area, you never again need to advertise– they’ll be lined up at your door.
And because you are doing exactly what you were put on this planet for, you will have enormous job satisfaction and perform your craft in such a flawless manner that the E&O people never need to hear from you. Because you are in high demand, getting paid, and paid well, is not an issue.
So, when you are figuring out how to play your game in the new post-COVID world, the trick is to be crystal clear about your personal giftedness. Once you know that, the perfect clients become self-evident, and how to run your business becomes obvious.
