“A Role Model” — Guest Article by Michael Hughes, North America’s Networking Guru

My friend Michael Hughes has been a very important influence in my life as I entered retirement from law and transitioned to the world of speaking, writing, and coaching. Michael’s recent “e-tip” struck a note, and I’m reproducing it entirely below. If you want to know more about effective business networking, Michael’s your guy, not because of tacky techniques, but because he shows you how to build your network by being genuine, caring, and methodical.

Here’s a sample of Michael:

Over the last few months, I’ve had conversations, both live and virtual, with a number of quality professionals. Many had one thing in common: They chose our country.

I met with one today. He arrived here five years ago and spent six months looking for work in his field. His wife, who has a Masters in Education, worked at McDonald’s to pay the rent.

When he found employment, he immediately started a charity that supplied meals to his community. It has now expanded into his dream of creating a city-wide meal program.

He bootstrapped its growth through a web of partnerships and grants. He created a sustainable foodservice network that serves free meals to seniors, new Canadians, low-income families and children at risk.
P.S.: this week they served over 2,600 lunches to kids at summer camps.

His passion is palpable. His enthusiasm is contagious. His commitment to serve, to help, and to make a difference is self-evident. I consider Abhijit Potdar (https://networkingforresults.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6acb347d37c71442eaa3442cf&id=f6e15347dd&e=3e3f2bf418) a role model.

This week’s tip:
Invest time with new arrivals to our country. We are blessed they chose us and are enriched through their contributions. Some may even renew your faith in humankind.

It seems that Vlad’s “special operation” isn’t going so well. To be sure, he probably didn’t count on the formidable response of the West, and he certainly got it entirely wrong about the resolve of Ukrainians. But his version of Anschluss is crumbling mostly because of factors decades in the making, for which he has…

Here we are on the cusp of a new year, more ready than usual to assign the old one to the dustbin of history. At the risk of tempting fate, it’s hard to imagine how 2021 could be much worse than 2020. Whether we like it or not, we’ll soon be drinking full from the…

  • Some Good!

If you go Down East and ever want to sound as if you belong, learn to say “Some good!” Better still, learn to say, “Right some good!” The first means excellent, the latter means “the very best”. Now, to be sure, your “good” has to sound more like “gooooood”, and “right” falls somewhere between “rite”…

Life sucks, doesn’t it? There’s never enough of the good things, and always too many of the bad things. Income is too low, expenses are too high. Even the weather is mostly lousy. What’s a grown man or woman to do? Frankly, it’s time for a good old-fashioned tantrum. That’s it – let’s just lie…
