The Four Magic Words

There are probably no four words in the field of human communication more powerful than, “How can I help?”

So often we encounter friends, family, and colleagues suffering a loss, facing an ugly obstacle or carrying a weighty burden. Words of consolation or encouragement are fine, especially if heartfelt. Where appropriate, an embrace or a touch can be comforting. But there’s nothing quite like “How can I help?”

“How can I help?” says that you’re willing to help shoulder their burden. It says that you’re prepared to participate in their pain. It tells them that you’re more than just words, but to paraphrase the biblical phrase, you’re willing to share the “fellowship of their suffering”.

Next time you’re tempted to utter the cost-free, throw-away “our thoughts and prayers are with you”, stop and ask if you really care. If you do, try “How can I help?”

Of the best pedigree, this little brown Jersey produced prodigious quantities of milk (at least, for a Jersey) and always of the highest butterfat content, for which the breed is famous. Not only was she the best producer, but she was…

I’m a dog guy. For most of my years I’ve had a canine companion, generally a border collie or a BC mix. Many times when I need quiet time with my thoughts I prefer a dog at my side. He’ll think no less of me when I sing off key, tell a bad joke, or…

The Great Orange One has just handed us another lesson in leadership. No, not Trump’s leadership, but that of Denmark, the other Nordic countries, Europe, Canada, and several other key players. They taught us again a lesson, one which I used to call “the Skunk Gambit” which I would explain to clients all worked up…
