What the Old Class Photo Teaches About Powerful Communication

You meet an old friend from high school who pulls out the class picture. Who do you look for first?

Don’t lie to me, now– you know exactly whose face you’re looking for! It’s yourself, right?

Don’t feel awkward– we’re all the same. This is literally nature at work. Nature builds self-interest and self-preservation into every fiber of our beings. That’s what keeps us alive and (mostly) out of trouble.

So, what’s the lesson for the dynamic communicator? Simply this– everybody (except maybe your mother) thinks about themselves first. If you want to get me on your wavelength, you need to talk about me, not you! Sorry, but it’s true.

Try this for a week: every time you engage with a prospect, a colleague, a client, or someone near-and-dear, focus entirely on them and their needs. Track the outcomes. I’ll guarantee that you’ll find yourself far more persuasively connected than you’ve ever been! Amazingly, the more you focus on others, the better opinion they will have of you. Funny, that!
